Description

M82 and its neighbor M81 were discovered in 1774 by Johann Bode. Located in the constellation Usra Major, M82 is approx 12 million light-years from Earth and has an apparent magnitude of 8.4. The Cigar galaxy is notable for its high rate of star production and its center is one hundred time more luminous than that of the Milky Way. The Hubble telescope observed `97 star clusters with an average mass of around 200,000 solar masses. Young stars are being born in this region at a rate 10 times faster than they are in the entire Milky Way.
